People mix these up constantly, and it’s no wonder — the names rhyme. But Medicare and Medicaid are two different programs.
Medicare
Medicare is federal health insurance based mainly on age (65+) or certain disabilities. It’s the same nationwide, you typically earn it through work history, and most people pay a Part B premium. This is what the rest of this site is about.
Medicaid
Medicaid is based on income and resources, and it’s administered with the states — in Utah, through Utah Medicaid. It can cover people of any age who meet the financial criteria, and it often covers services Medicare doesn’t, like long-term custodial care.
Dual-eligible: having both
Some Grand County residents qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid — called “dual-eligible.” If that’s you, you may benefit from a Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP), a type of Medicare Advantage plan built for people with both. See Special Needs Plans.
